Hey guys! I can’t believe I actually went through with this DIY glitter backsplash! We’ve been needing a backsplash for a long time and this was a very impromptu DIY. Shortly after I painted my kitchen cabinets I had some water-based polyurethane left over and some glitter left on the counter. I just wanted to experiment a little bit. I wasn’t sure if this was going to be a DIY WIN or a DIY FAIL…
I looked up legit glitter backslashes and for around $6-7/sq ft. you could have a really nice backsplash! Or, you can just fake it and DIY them! Today I’m showing you how to DIY Glitter Backsplash using only 2 ingredients. This is a cost effective way for a GLAM kitchen!
It was really easy and I’m super happy with how it turned out!
- The first thing you want to do (that I didn’t do, but realized afterwards) is paint your wall the same color of your glitter, or at least consider the options before you go throwing glitter onto it.
So in my instance, because I’m using gold glitter-I should have painted my wall gold. It just depends on your style and taste, but make sure you take this into consideration.
I liked using the jumbo glitter for this because I liked the look of it better. I suggest adding in fine glitter with it so that it covers the surface completely. The loose glitter will “fill in” the gaps of the jumbo glitter.
After 2 coats…you can still see a bit of the wall behind the glitter. I think I should have painted the walls a gold color before applying the glitter, but it was too late to go back at this point. I just kept applying more coats of poly + glitter.
Pictures really don’t do it justice. The glitter gives off such a beautiful shiny, and reflective cast, it really gives this kitchen the POP it needed. If this were my house, I would have kept it this way.
Scott is pretty lenient and lets me do whatever I want, but he wasn’t a fan of it. I later changed it out with Peel and stick backsplash. If this was my house, I totally would have kept it!
NOT BAD for using scrap supplies I had laying around!! I didn’t spend any extra money on this brand new backsplash! This kitchen has been so much fun between painting the cabinets, adding the glitter backsplash, testing out the peel and stick backsplash, and updating our appliances with faux stainless steel.
I also added some 8×10 black and white photos that I printed off with photo paper above our kitchen cabinets. I had a hard time decided on what to put up there-but I LOVE the way this looks!!
I even think it would even be cool to use rhinestones! What do you guys think, is it a win or a fail? Is this something you would do?
